Why Is This Important?
Hi! My name is Barbara Anne.
I have lived on Vancouver Island my entire life (52 years). I have worked here, raised my children here and lived a life of adventure, love, & happiness here.
I have also been incredibly fortunate to have been mentored and guided by incredible women my entrie life. Women who dreamed big, worked hard, and always supported other women every chance they had.
To those who know me, It was no surprise when 5 years ago I gave up the corporate world to follow my greatest passion, which has always been about elevating and celebrating the women in my life. Only this time I chose to use a tool I have also loved nearly as long, my camera. From the time I turned 13 I started creating portraits with the camera my father had gifted me. It started with friends and family, and eventually evolved to my co-workers and then models and strangers.
So why this campaign and why now?
Two years ago I turned 50 and it became clear to me women were hiding from the camera, being lost to time, and one day there would be no record of the incredible women in our community. At least not as part of the legacy they deserved.
Fate would have it, that I had already met Blaise Hunter, and when she had an idea to create a Women of Influence Awards Platform, I didn't even blink before I heard myself tell her I wanted to photograph every woman nominated. We thought it would either be 10-20 women OR a number that sounded more like "what was I thinking???". it turned out to be the latter and it has been one of the most incredible expriences of my entire life.
This campaign exists because over the past 2 years I photographed 313 women who were each been nominated for a Women of Influence Award in Nanaimo, and I saw how the experience of being in front my camera CHANGED LIVES.
Women entered my studio saying:
- I'm not photogenic,
- I hate being in front of the camera
- I hate photos of myself
- I'm only here because I was nominated, this is not my idea of fun
- I am uncomfortable with how much I weigh
- I hate my chin, my arms, my legs, my stomach, my nose, etc.
- And my favourite: Good luck, You wont be able to create a photo of me that I like .
And I proved them wrong! I saw women learn to see themselves differently, I saw women cry at the beauty in their portraits that they had never seen or even believed was actually there. They said over and over again: I see me here, the essence of who I am. And they loved themselves more for it.
Every woman found a photo of herself that she loved, and most were shocked at HOW MANY they loved. How hard it was to choose a favourite.
I believe, with my entire being, Every woman deserves to be celebrated for all that you’ve overcome and all that you have yet to accomplish.
You deserve to exist in portraits. You deserve to have photos of yourself that you LOVE.
