Hi there! My name is Barbara
I am a portrait photographer based in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, specializing in Contemporary Women's Portraits, including Maternity, Dance, Boudoir and Personal Branding.
My greatest joy is empowering women to embrace their unique beauty and remind them of their inner strength; to celebrate the journey that has brought her to who she is today, and to reinvigorate her to chase her dreams of tomorrow.
Our Empowered Portrait Experience is designed so you can leave any insecurities and fears at the door, and relax knowing that you are in good hands. As a full service studio, we guide you through every aspect of the portrait experience; planning, preparing, wardrobe, hair, makeup, posing, and image selection.

Barbara and I met after my heart surgery to create my portraits. I had been down and out, felt defeated, suffered from anxiety and a lack of confidence. Slowly I healed and got better but that scar, that huge scar took my breath away and not in a good way. I hid it for a while. It was a reminder that somehow I had failed my body. I wanted to wear my scar proudly and not hide it. During my portrait session I experienced a gamut of emotions, from joy and laughter to sorrow and tears. We cried together at the end because Barbara saw me, my pain and my joy, my courage and my fears. She captured what I couldn’t see."

Four days before my breast-cancer surgery, I had a photo-shoot with Barbara Anne Photography. My cancer diagnosis suddenly everything changed… A photoshoot no longer felt like a luxury, or a slightly vain bit of fun to celebrate turning 55 - it became an act of defiance against my looming mortality. I realized it may be the legacy I left behind … I needed a record of my body before it was changed by the surgeon’s knife; photos of me as a woman at 55, as a matriarch, a mother, a lover and, yes, as a cancer warrior. Barbara, at every stage, respected my comfort and my boundaries. She understood what I needed to do - to show strength, to show humanity, to show vulnerability, to laugh in the face of fear, to lead the way for those I love. Has anyone ever truly captured you? Not how pretty you are - Your essence.

When I sat for my studio session - based on my image of myself - I honestly did not expect Barbara could do much. Oh me of little faith. She made the session so much fun - lots of laughter with the posing. When I saw the portraits at the reveal - I started to cry - I couldn’t believe the portraits were the photos she had taken of me. I looked absolutely stunning! It is like Barbara Anne says - you have an image of what you look like in the mirror but these photos are what everyone else sees. If I have an off day - I look at the portraits again and remind myself how beautiful I really am.
